Tarpons fall hard to Rio Hondo, 92-54

By LARRY GAGE

The Rio Hondo Bobcats came prowling into Tarpon Gym Tuesday night undefeated in district play at 9-0.  Their league record remains unblemished after a 92-54 shellacking of Port Isabel.

The Tarpons led 2-0 and the score was tied at 6 apiece before the visiting Bobcats ripped off a 26-4 run, taking a 32-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.  It was 54 -22 at the break.  The closest P.I. came to the lead after that was 22 points, when the score was 65-43 in the third period.  It was Port Isabel’s best quarter as they outscored the ‘Cats, 21-15.  It was all Rio Hondo from then on and that was a final, 92-54.

Rio Hondo used their speed and quickness afoot to score points off numerous turnovers in the first half.  “They’re fast.  We knew that going in,” Tarpon head man Al Senteno said afterwards.  “First half we had too many turnovers.  They made shots and did a great job defensively.  We just didn’t take care of the basketball.”
