Arresting developments for shelter

 By JOE R. BOWLING, JR.

For the second time in a matter of weeks, an arrest was made in relation to the Port Isabel Animal Shelter. According to the Port Isabel Police Department (PIPD), an unlicensed veterinarian was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 15.

This as the Laguna Madre Humane Society (LMHS), who operates the shelter, continues to work with the city towards signing a new lease.

According to the PIPD, Jose Alberto Hernandez was arrested this week and will face two charges relating to possession of a controlled substance and operating without a license in the State of Texas. According to PIPD, another arrest came earlier when Juan Trejo was arrested on a Class C drug paraphernalia charge, February 16. Trejo was working at the time of the arrest which was made after a search of his vehicle which was stationed at the parking lot. According to police, the substance that Hernandez was found with is used in treating animals, however, only state certified handlers are allowed to possess such substances.

“This is not good,” said Port Isabel City Manager Ed Meza.
