Fierro wins in Meet of Champions

 By LARRY GAGE

Port Isabel Tarpon runner Armando Fierro continued his winning ways in the long-distance races this season by taking first place in the 1600-meter run at the RGVCA Meet of Champions on Saturday in Weslaco. He also placed second in the 800 meter race.

In winning the 1600, Fierro came from behind on the final lap. He also not only beat his own personal best time in that event, but set the fastest time in the Valley for the season with a clocking of 4:24.85. “He got out, stayed in front and on the last lap the La Joya kid (Angel Banda, Juarez-Lincoln) passed him up,” Tarpon boys head track coach Jake Hofstetter said Monday morning. “Then Mando kicked it in and beat them all. He ran really well.”

In the preliminaries at Raymondville on Friday, Fierro won the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.77. He improved to 1:57.90 in finishing second to Tony Jaramillo of Rio Hondo on Saturday. That was also a new personal best for Fierro in that event.

Coming into the Meet of Champs Fierro had the second-best time in the Valley in the 3200 meters, 9:39.43. He did not run that race at Weslaco as runners are limited to two races over 400 meters on a given day.
