The Port Isabel Tarpons baseball team took care of business at home Thursday night in shutting out Donna IDEA Academy, 10-0. With Grulla’s 11-1 win over Rio Hondo on Friday Port Isabel has made the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
The Tarpons led 1-0 after one inning, then put six runs across in the second frame to take a 7-0 lead. The game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.
Pitcher Josh Barker turned in another good night’s work on the mound, going all the way for the win and throwing a no-hitter in the process. He again brought his good stuff on this night and recorded 13 strikeouts. He did not give up a hit and walked five.
A strong wind blowing in from outside the left field foul line was moving Barker’s pitches around slightly, but Barker struck out six batters in the first two innings. Bases on balls allowed IDEA to put men on, and in the 3rd and 4th innings they had runners on second and third with two outs. The runner was thrown out at first base the first time, and Barker got his third strikeout of the inning to end Donna’s final threat in the fourth.
Armando Fierro doubled in the first inning and scored on a passed ball. Kenny Herrera, Fierro, Bobby Barker, Isaiah Martinez, James Ramirez, and Blake Sapp each came across for runs in the second inning, and Herrera, Bobby Barker, and Martinez each scored in the fourth.
Bobby Barker hit safely twice and had an RBI. Josh Barker got a hit and drove in two runs. Johnny Loera and Roger Villareal each knocked in a run with sacrifice flys. Kenny Herrera and Blake Sapp each got a hit and stole two and four bases respectively.
The Tarpons have one more regular season game to play, which will be at Rio Hondo this Saturday (April 30). They are in third place in the District 32-3A standings with a 7-4 record. Zapata is undefeated in district play at 11-0 and Grulla is second at 9-2.
