Marching band practice is starting earlier than usual at Port Isabel High this summer. In recent years the head director of bands, Scott Hartsfield, gave band members a few weeks off at the end of the school year. Around the first of July, then, the drum line and color guard people would start coming in for weekday practices. Practice sessions for the full band would then commence around the first of August.
“This year we’re starting early….with drum line and color guard, those things,” Hartsfield said in his office this week. “The state allows us to start actually working the whole band together on August 1.” The above-named groups will get together for a few weeks, then take the middle part of the summer off.
