Repair work on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway is expected to be extended to Labor Day, said Rex Costly, project manager for TxDOT.

The work, though necessary to maintain the strength of the causeway has local businesses stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Weekend traffic heading East to the Island gets backed up as far as Laguna Heights and turns the city of Port Isabel into a traffic jam.

“I’m very concerned for the people who do not want to get out of line to visit our businesses,” PI Police Chief Gualberto Gonzalez said.
