From July 16-17, South Padre Island was “cheertastic” in hosting the American Spirit Championships where over 15 single performers, over 40 cheer teams and eight dance teams competed for the title of champions of the first cheerleadering competition of the season.
Cheerleaders and dancers came from all over Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. “This is the 13th year to have the event here,” said Vice-president of A.S.C. Nathan Dantzler, “We love coming to South Padre Island because of the family atmosphere and being so close to the beach, plus the sport is growing in the Rio Grande Valley.”
At the competition; all participants and teams leave with a trophy and beach tote gift. Andrew Gonzales, head coach of South Texas Xtreme, said “We come to this competition because it is laid back and a great way to start off the season.”
