The project housing in Port Isabel is set to be demolished and reconstructed by the beginning of 2012, relocating 73 families, said Port Isabel Housing Authority Executive Director Judy Sanchez.
The units are located at Hockaday and Ash Dr.
“We’ve had special meeting for two years, to notify the public that we are in the process of doing this,” Sanchez said. “The residents get a voucher so they can relocate to any apartment complexes that are in the Section 8 Program. And they have 90 days to find a new residence and move.”
The Section 8 Program, Sanchez explained, is a financial aid to low income families who cannot afford housing on their own. They are given a voucher from the Housing Authority and are able to take to different housing or apartment developments and only have to pay a portion of the rent.
“It’s the same thing as living here, except they won’t be living in the projects, they’ll be living outside the area. We will be paying 30 percent.”
