There’s nothing like actual competition to prepare a team for the playoffs.  On Tuesday night the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons volleyball team went on the road to take on PSJA Southwest in a District 32-3A match.  The Ladies had already locked up a playoff spot, and they won the match in straight sets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-12.

Head coach George Hamilton kept some of his regular starters on the bench here and there in order to give a few of his younger players more playing time.  The additional game experience gained by these players could be important when the playoffs start.  “We got a lot of our younger players some playing time,” Coach Hamilton said.  “We played them…to get some playing experience in case we have any injuries, come playoffs.”

More than the usual number of substitutions were made and a starter or two was held out of a set altogether.  “In the first set I didn’t play Helena Loya at all,” Hamilton said during a team photo session in the gym Wednesday afternoon.  “In the second set I didn’t play Kate Bowles at all. In the third set I came out with the starters so we could work on getting quick sets.”
