SPI Convention CentreFor the City of South Padre Island, it is out with the old and in with the new, sort of; in terms of committees, the City of South Padre Island has dissolved the Convention Centre Expansion Task Force, and added a new committee to evaluate requests for qualifications (RFQs).

According to SPI City Manager Joni Clarke, “The discussion is not far enough along for us to even know what we are going to do yet.” As Clarke discussed the city’s plans to start requests for qualification (or RFQs), she referenced the authorization from the Jan. 18, 2012 City Council meeting in which the City Council authorized Clarke to do so. “Once the qualifications begin to come in,” Clarke said, “we have appointed a new committee (of two council members and one staff member) that will evaluate those qualifications, and give us a better idea of when they can get started, and how long it will take.” Clarke anticipates a couple of weeks to work thorough the qualification, depending on when they arrive on her desk.
