Rockin’ Restaurant Review: Yummies Bistro Café

There are very few things this girl loves as much as Sunday brunch. You can sleep past 10 a.m. and still get eggs almost anywhere. Alcohol is often included and socially accepted with brunch as well.

Win, win.

That being said, I decided to check out the recently renovated and expanded Yummies Bistro Café, which is now serving wine, beer and mimosas.

Dining alone this Sunday, I found a bar stool with my name on it at the newly-opened “Rooster Bar” with a charming bartender, a local Jeff Covington, who’s been with Yummies since 2008. There isn’t a dish on the vast menu he can’t explain in great detail with a smile and enthusiasm.

I’m tempted to start with a specialty tea or coffee.

Frappes, Lattes, Cappuccinos – oh my.

However, Jeff recommends I try the Prickly Pear Mimosa, a house specialty, or the Classic Mimosa. I opt for one of each.

I’m told of the most popular dishes: The Infamous Bistro Burger, Ernie’s Bacon Stuffed Waffle, Rose’s Detox Salad (which contains the freshest organic greens from a local farm in Bayview), South of the Border Barbacoa Plate (served with homemade flour/corn tortillas that are made daily) and the Eggs Benedict (which will come out in a smiling presentation).

I opt to pick off the menu and decide on the Chipotle Shrimp to add a little spice to my Sunday Funday brunch dining experience. My Chipotle Shrimp had a generous serving of shrimp sautéed in chipotle cream sauce and served over baby spinach with Mediterranean flatbread. The menu description did not do this dish justice. But, in one word, I can sum it up – yummy.

As I sip my Classic Mimosa, I check out the ambiance, local artist’s works are hanging on the wall and Yummies souvenirs are on display for those who are looking to take something home to commemorate their dining experience.

My Sunday Funday brunch experience at Yummies wouldn’t be complete without a slice of grapefruit pie. Local Ruby Red Grapefruits from Bayview Farms and a flaky pie crust. Simply divine.

Yummies Bistro Café is located at 700 Padre Blvd. and is open Wed-Mon from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and will be extending hours in April to provide a casual dining experience in the evenings.
