SPI opts out of tax rate hike

The South Padre Island City Council held a public hearing for the 2012-2013 tax rate.

The council approved the effective tax rate of .252701, which would bring in the same income as last year. The council did not feel a tax rate hike was necessary because it was not required to balance the budget. The council approved an Ordinance to be read and discussed September 12 at the city council regular meeting.

The council also held a public hearing for the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget. The Port Isabel Public Library was opposed to the budget because it would no longer fund the reading room program at the library. The library will be on the agenda for the next city council meeting.

The city council took action on two items at the meeting. The 2012-2013 EDC fiscal year and the closing of the causeway for The King of the Causeway Bicycle Race on September 15 were approved.
