Appraiser cautions taxpayers

Special to the PRESS

Homeowners throughout Cameron County are receiving letters from a company called Property Tax Assessor Records Corp and another company called Homestead Recording Service.

The letters announce a possible tax overpayment due to homestead law revisions. As a result, the Cameron Appraisal District has been deluged with calls about the legitimacy of the announcement. The companies offer the service of filing a property owner’s homestead exemption with the local appraisal district for a one-time processing fee.

“Is the homeowner required to pay for this?” No. The Cameron Appraisal District, and every appraisal district in the state, offers this exemption application for free. Additionally, the Cameron Appraisal District participates in numerous public events and school conferences to provide free public access to all exemption forms and to answer questions property owners may have regarding appraisal and exemptions.
