In this election year, one person who doesn’t need to hear long-winded speeches about the promise of America is Jerry Showman.

The “partially” retired businessman is the textbook entrepreneur who has owned a number of successful businesses in his lifetime, including a couple of businesses locally.

Showman described himself as partially retired, noting that he’s not quite ready to give up working all together. “I’ve got to keep busy,” he said with a grin.

The part-time Island resident and Shirley, his wife of nearly 50 years, are happy to return to their South Padre condo overlooking the Gulf of Mexico for the winter months. But being the hard worker that Jerry is and true to his mantra of “keeping busy,” he decided to pursue a longtime dream of penning children’s books.
