The South Padre Island Shoreline Task Force held a regular meeting Monday.
The task force heard a presentation from Clayton Brashear, owner of Clayton’s Beach Bar. Brashear said his goal is to build a fishing pier at his establishment on the Island. He said the pier is planned to be 1,000 feet long and 15 feet wide.
Brashear said the fishing pier would help bring guests to his establishment during the winter season and that it would also be a tourist attraction that the entire Island would appreciate.
The pier would be on the gulf side of the Island. The Shoreline Task Force endorsed the project because it would also help with beach erosion in that area and will be sending a formal recommendation to the city council. Brashear said he has begun the process with the U.S. Corps of Engineers to acquire permits necessary to build the pier.
The Shoreline Task Force reviewed their goals and objectives and added protect and develop access points to the bayside of the Island and expansion and development of the Tomkins channel.
