LMAG invites public to anniversary party

Special to the Parade

LMAG anniversaryThe Laguna Madre Art Gallery is having a party from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, and you are invited!

The gallery opened for business one year ago and members will be celebrating the gallery’s first anniversary with food and entertainment. Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and South Padre Island Chamber Islanders will be on hand to help celebrate the event.

The popular Happy Band, the Laguna Madre area’s own unique ukulele band, will entertain from 4 to 6 p.m. At 6 p.m., El Paseo Arts Foundation president Mary Hartman will play piano. Gallery members will be on hand to discuss their art and new gallery members, Greg Johnson, William Heath, Peggy Paris, and Michael Kreider will be introduced.

One year ago, with a lot of help from community individuals, businesses, and city government, art gallery members were able to take over the space vacated by the Purple Parrot. When the Purple Parrot owners Ralph and Kitty Ayers decided to quit their business in the fall of 2011, they suggested that members of the Laguna Madre Art League start their own gallery. Voncille Zama and Virginia Eggert rallied the members to support a small group of artists to launch the gallery.

The gallery is located at 405 Maxan St., Port Isabel, at the Lighthouse Square. For more information, call (956) 943-1407 or drop by Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Other events scheduled for February include Beth Fedigan’s Advanced Encaustic Painting Workshop from February 24 to 25.
