This edition of the Beach Bar Beat takes us to Jake’s Bar and Restaurant, which has recently re-opened its doors.
Happy Hour at Jake’s is every day from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and they are proud to serve $2 drafts and $2.50 wells. The family environment is perfect for treating mom this Mother’s Day. This week’s bartender tells us a little more about Jake’s come back.
Name: Shannon Colvin
Specialty drink: I’ve got a few, the gummy bear, Barbie and the wicked witch. They are all pretty good.
How long have you been bartending: I have been doing this for seven years.
What do you like about working on South Padre Island: I get to meet lots of tourists that come on vacation from everywhere. It is fun meeting so many.
Who is your favorite fictional bartender: Well, I got to say Tom Cruise, but I don’t do things like that. I am not that kind of bartender.
What is a pet peeve from behind the bar: Not too many. I like everyone, but I do not like when people show up so close to closing, but I deal with it.
How will you celebrate Mother’s Day: I will be working, but I will be buying my mom a necklace from a local shop.
What is your favorite part about South Padre Island: The Island feel everywhere here, it is always on happy hour.
When is a good time to visit Jake’s: Anytime, but on Friday and Saturday we got Karaoke.

After summer, bartenders featured in the Beach Bar Beat will be rounded up to compete to be this year’s champion. To participate, you can vote for your favorite in the second annual South Padre Parade’s Beach Bartender Competition.
Feel free to join me for a drink when you see me working the Beach Bar Beat. It is a tough job, but someone has to do it.
