Shallow Sport Tournament on tap

Special to the Parade

Shallow Sport will host its 13th Annual Owners Fishing Tournament Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island.

Every year this event grows in participation and attendance, quickly becoming known as one of the more fun tournaments on the Gulf Coast.

With 172 registered boats last year and $30,000 in door prizes to give away this year, the tourney has turned into a festive Island party with fishing.

Friday kicks things off overlooking the bay with a Sunset Registration and Reunion full of old friends, large tales, gift bags, free live music, appetizers, sodas and keg beer.

“Boom!” Saturday Morning will begin with a shotgun start sending over 170 vessels blasting off in different directions at 6:30 a.m. and is truly an amazing site to witness. From 1-4 p.m., anglers, kids and spectators alike will have a good time seeing all the big fish brought in to Shallow Sport’s “Flotilla-Style-Dock-Party” called a weigh-in. Saturday night, we celebrate the anglers with an awards banquet dinner that starts at 7 p.m. and features the best door prizes, cold drinks, trophies, and, of course, more free live music.

Hosting both guided and amateur divisions, the Shallow Sport Owner’s Tournament gives out 35 trophies (first through fifth place) for the biggest fish in each category: Speckled Trout, Red Fish, and Flounder. Their is also a trophy for Grande Champion (Best combined weight of all three species) per division and a Youth division (first through third place) for largest fish caught by anglers under the age of 13, so please bring the whole family. Trophies are original framed works of art from local South Texas artist Don Breeden.
