Port Isabel Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lisa Garcia released a statement Friday afternoon shortly after news broke that the body of a missing PIISD student had been found in the Laguna Madre.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Nahum Barragan Castañeda for their loss,” Garcia said in the statement. She went on to say, “We continue to pray for the students and families.”

In the statement, Garcia asks that anyone wishing to help the child’s family with funeral expenses can do so by contacting Lighthouse Assembly of God Church or Wells Fargo Bank.

Donations can be made out to:

Castañeda went missing Thursday evening after the boat he and two friends were on overturned. A search was launched and included Port Isabel and South Padre Island police, as well as county, state and federal agencies. The search continued through the night but was temporarily halted Friday morning as bad weather passed through the area. Castañeda’s body was discovered by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials shortly after the search was resumed.
