At Wednesday evening’s SPI City Council meeting, City Manager Bill DiLibero announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the John L. Tompkins Park will take place at 10 a.m. on Oct. 23. With the groundbreaking coming up, DiLibero recommended an appraisal of the five vacant lots just south of the park, adjacent to Padre Boulevard and East Sunset Drive.

The owner of the two lots adjacent to Padre Boulevard expressed an interest to sell the lots to the City, and staff has applied for a grant to purchase the lots for additional public parking. Not only would the lots be beneficial for the park, but they would also provide parking towards the General Land Office (GLO) requirements to provide adequate free parking before implementation of paid parking with the Beach User Fee plan. The City Council gave the city manager approval to proceed with the order and appraisal on each of the five lots.
