Chili dogs and cotton candy, patrol pooches and bouncy princess castles, flashing lights and shiny badges — this and more could be found at the South Padre Island Convention Centre Tuesday evening as the South Padre Island Police Department hosted its annual National Night Out.

Ever keeping watch, SPI Chief of Police Randy Smith stood apart from the families who gathered in the Centre’s main hall, but was all smiles when he spoke of the event’s importance. “We look at it as a great opportunity to network with the community,” he said shortly after finishing a conversation with one Island couple.

“It gives them an opportunity to talk to us about concerns that they might have” that they might not otherwise know how to bring to the department, he said.
