The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons made the long trip to Grulla Tuesday night and lost in overtime, 57-52, in their fourth district game of the season.

It was a close, hard-fought contest most of the way, but Port Isabel got a bit of a lead in the first half.

“We started off great, 8-2, in the first quarter,” Port Isabel head coach Blake Ramsey told the Press Wednesday.  “(Then) we’d let them inch their way back in.  They would hit some big shots and we could never quite pull away.”

These Lady Tarpons have a nose for the ball and they made a season-high 43 steals on the night.  The problem was that they had trouble converting those steals into points at the other end.

“We just missed too many easy shots,” Ramsey said. n

P.I. led 11-10 at the end of a quarter of play and the score was tied at 20 at the break.  The Lady Tarpons were in front by two at the start of the fourth quarter, and led 44-42 with under a minute to play in regulation.

Grulla tied it up on a running floater and P.I. called timeout with seven seconds to play.  “We tried to slow it down and play for the last shot.  They made a steal and it was overtime.”

The visiting Lady Tarpons were outscored 13-8 in the five minute OT period, and that was a final, 57-52.

Alex Martinez led P.I. in scoring with 19 points and 13 steals.  Freshman Sabrina Garza scored 11 points.  Jasmine Saldivar had seven points and 13 steals and Natasha Ramirez got eight points and five steals.

Grulla improves to 2-2 and is tied with Hidalgo for fourth place in District 32-4A.  The Lady Gators trail Rio Hondo (3-1), La Feria (4-0), and Zapata (4-0) in the standings.  The Lady Tarpons are 1-3 and in 6th place.

Last Saturday, Raymondville visited Tarpon Gym and the Lady Tarpons got the three-game sweep.  The freshmen won, 24-20, the JV squad came out on top, 43-26, and the Varsity got the win, 45-28.

At Grulla Tuesday night the Lady Tarpons freshmen team lost, 27-25, and the JV team won, 47-26.

This Friday all Tarpon and Lady Tarpon teams will be back in Tarpon Gym and Hidalgo will provide the opposition.  Both gyms will be utilized.  The Tarpons Varsity will tip-off at 6:30 p.m. and the Lady Tarpons Varsity will follow at 8 p.m.  They will be preceded by the girls’ and boys’ JV games, which are both scheduled to start at 5:00 o’clock.  The freshmen boys’ game will go at 8:00 o’clock and the freshmen girls’ should get started around 6:30 p.m.
