The Fourth of July weekend ended in tragedy after two people died in separate incidents on South Padre Island Monday.
Port Isabel resident Danae Gomez Medina, 41, was struck by a vehicle while walking near the 700 block of Padre Boulevard. According to a statement released by the City of South Padre Island, the driver of the vehicle was identified as James Edward Hull, also of Port Isabel.
Medina “was air-evacuated but later died,” the statement reads.
South Padre Island Chief of Police stated the truck Hull was driving was a delivery vehicle for a nearby business. “He was backing out of the area,” Smith said.
Officers on the scene conducted a field sobriety test and obtained a warrant for a blood sample, Smith said. “It wasn’t alcohol, but there was something that led officers to believe that needed to be drawn,” Smith said.
The results of the blood test can take up to six weeks to return, he said.
