Recognition of outgoing South Padre Island Mayor Bharat ‘Barry’ Patel led off the agenda of the Wednesday Nov. 15 City Council meeting.

“On behalf of all the City employees, we want to thank you for your incredible leadership, and support as mayor of the City of South Padre Island. You have shown keen intellect, innovation, tenacity, vision and most importantly grace as our mayor,” City Manager Susan Guthrie said, reading a statement.

“It’s been such a tremendous ride with you. It’s been wonderful, the leadership, mentoring, but I’ve got to give you one last thing for leaving us with so much work to do that you started. We’re gonna be busy,” joked Councilmember Paul Munarriz.

“Barry has really pushed some of the things that I’ve worked obviously very extremely slow on for years, and Barry has gotten them done, so I’m really happy for that,” noted Councilmember Alita Bagley.

Incoming Mayor Dennis Stahl led the presentation of an award to Patel. “The title of this says ‘outstanding leadership,’ and there’s a little bit more, but I can’t think of a better way to say it. It’s been an honor to serve with you,” Stahl said.
