As the South Padre Island City Council canvassed the results of the Nov. 7 election during its Wednesday, Nov. 15 meeting, it also ushered in a change in City leadership.

Outgoing Mayor Barry Patel read the election results. In early voting for City Council Place 1, Ken Medders received 118 votes, while Joel Melton got 62. Election Day results showed 148 votes for Medders, with 78 for Melton. “Congratulations, Ken, for being on Place 1, City Council,” Patel declared.

“I’d also like to welcome back our long serving City Councilman Alita Bagley,” Patel said, in recognition of her re-election to Place 4 on the council. Bagley ran unopposed.

“I’d also like to congratulate Dennis Stahl for stepping up to the plate for the mayor-ship for the City of South Padre Island,” Patel added. Like Bagley, Stahl ran unopposed in his bid for mayor.            The Council voted to unanimously affirm the election.

In his final action as mayor, Patel moved to the installation and administration of oaths to the newly elected and re-elected City officials. Justice of the Peace Benny Ochoa administered the oath of office for newly elected Councilmember Ken Medders, who then took his seat at the Place 1 . Bagley was sworn in by Patel.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. administered the oath for the newly minted mayor, Dennis Stahl.
