Popular fundraiser marked by martinis and merriment

One of the most popular events on South Padre Island, the Merry Martini Ball, took place Saturday, Dec. 9 at the South Padre Island Convention Centre. Revelers dressed in their fanciest finery gathered to celebrate the holiday season and donate toys and food for families throughout the Laguna Madre area.

While SPI usually embodies a casual, laid-back atmosphere, the Merry Martini Ball affords Islanders the opportunity to get dressed up for this special evening.  Women don elegant gowns, furs, heels and even a tiara or two, while the men ditch their cargo shorts and flip flops for suits and ties and even a few tuxedos.

Resplendent in a colorful vest, Island resident Tommy Saenz was in attendance enjoying the delicious selection of martini concoctions available. Saenz reflected on how many Merry Martinis he’s participated in over the years. “Many, many, many, many, too many to count,” he said with a smile.

He commented further on the highlights of the party. “The best part of this event is to see all your friends and family dressed up in formal attire, just to mingle and catch up with what’s going on on the Island.”
