The Port Isabel Police Department [PIPD] is coming together to support one of its own.
PIPD Administrative Secretary and Court Records Clerk Monica Garza has been living with cancer and traveling from the Lower Laguna Madre to Houston, Texas, for treatment.
“Cancer is expensive,” said PIPD Chief Robert Lopez.
Garza has had to rent an apartment in Houston in order to receive treatment. Beforehand, she would drive back and forth during the week.
“It took a toll on the family,” said Lopez. “She has a daughter.”
According to Lopez, the members of the PD spoke among themselves and formulated a plan to aid Garza financially in this difficult time. They came up with the idea of hosting a BBQ fundraiser.
The fundraiser will take place on Feb. 18, 2023, from 11 – 2 p.m. at the Port Isabel Police Department, located at 110 W. Hickman, Port Isabel, Texas. Officers and volunteers will be serving plates consisting of rice, beans, bread and chicken. The PIPD will be selling BBQ Tickets to receive one of these plates for the next coming weeks until the event.
