This past Friday, March 17 the Port Isabel Tarpons women’s powerlifting team traveled to Frisco, TX to participate in the 4A DII State Powerlifting Championship Meet. The meet was held at the Comerica Center and consisted of 173 lifters. After sending one female powerlifter to the state meet last year, Port Isabel sent three lifters this year in April Puente, Natalie Martinez and Chelsea Gonzalez. Last year’s lone competitor, Puente brought home the gold medal in 2022 State Powerlifting meet with a total lift of 1055 lbs.
Individual placement is based on the summation of the following three lifts: 1. Squat, 2. Bench Press, and 3. Dead Lift resulting in a “Total Lift” total. An athlete is awarded points as follows 7, 5, 3, 2, or 1 for finishing as one of the first five finishers in each weight class. Team placement resulted with the summation of the school’s combined individual awarded points.
Puente entered her senior season with a leg injury which hampered her development for most of the first half of the school year. She persevered and managed to qualify for the 2023 State Powerlifting Meet. At state, Puente managed to accumulate a total lift of 1015 pounds by lifting 450 pounds in the Squat lift, 215 pounds in the Bench lift, and 350 pounds in the Dead Lift. Her total lift was the top weight lifted in her weight class tying her for first place with Victoria Pena out of Orange Grove. Unfortunately, the Body Weight (BWT) metric was used as a tie-breaker and Pena was awarded first place based on a slightly lower body weight and Puente was awarded a silver medal.
