June 18 saw the regularly scheduled meeting of the Point Isabel Independent School District School Board. The first agenda item the board went over was their Success Through Education Partnership, or STEP, program. The program is in place to assist at-risk students and ensure they do not fall through the cracks of the education system.

The program served 34 students throughout the 2022 to 2023 school year. Fourteen of those students finished the year at the twelfth grade level. The board unanimously voted to continue the program into the 2023 school year.

The second agenda item was approval for the third payment of general contractor fees. These fees are a part of the Point Isabel ISD phase two renovations. The contractor is hoping to have progress moving forward in the next few weeks on the construction.

During the contractor’s presentation, the board was also shown renderings of the new teachers lounges for all campuses, the locker rooms for the junior high and the auditorium for the high school. This project is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 30, 2023, pending discussion on new discoveries.

The presentation then went into what is planned for phase three. This portion showed renderings for site improvements at the elementary schools as well as the planned construction at the junior high transition academy. Those projects were told to proceed on June 20, but have not begun construction yet and are expected to be finished Feb. 21, 2024.
