RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups, a Texas Domestic Nonprofit Corporation founded in 2018, marked its fifth anniversary with a successful cleanup event on Saturday, December 30, 2023. The organization, led by Managing Director Richard G. Hitchcox, has been actively involved in organizing cleanups along various waterways and fishing areas in the Rio Grande Valley.
Established in response to the persistent issue of littering in popular fishing spots, the nonprofit aims to address environmental concerns and promote community involvement in maintaining the cleanliness of local waterways. Since its inception, the organization has gathered a dedicated group of volunteers who have collectively contributed significant hours to the cause.
One of the notable aspects of the organization’s efforts is its focus on acknowledging and thanking sponsors and volunteers. Certificates of Appreciation are presented to individuals and businesses that support cleanup events through sponsorship, including gift certificates, vouchers, gift cards, monetary donations, or merchandise items.
The idea for the initiative came when Hitchcox was fishing with his then 15-year-old son, and they had to maneuver around debris. “I got tired of taking him [my son] fishing and finding the fishing areas always trashed,” said Hitchcox, reflecting on the motivation behind starting the group. The organization’s commitment to cleanliness is underscored by its consistent efforts to involve the community in cleanup initiatives.
The nonprofit achieved Texas Domestic Nonprofit Corporation status on October 29, 2018, and has since not sought tax-exempt status. Nevertheless, it has actively engaged the community, successfully organizing over 20 cleanup events in various locations, including South Padre Island, Arroyo City, and Brownsville.
In addition to organizing cleanup events, RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups became a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) in 2019. The PVSA awards have been presented annually to volunteers meeting specific criteria, recognizing their verifiable community service hours.
To express gratitude towards volunteers, the organization conducts raffle-style prize giveaways after each cleanup, with volunteers receiving raffle tickets upon sign-in. Lunch, cold waters, and snacks are also provided to volunteers during the events.
Since its founding, the organization has collected a substantial amount of trash, totaling 129,800 pounds. Cleanup data from September 2018 to the present includes impressive numbers from various locations, showcasing the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
As RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups continues its mission, Hitchcox expressed gratitude to all supporters and sponsors who have assisted thus far. “Trash has no political affiliation,” Hitchcox emphasized, highlighting the organization’s commitment to being part of the solution in cleaning up local beaches and waterways.
The next RGV Fishing and Area Waterway Cleanup event is next Saturday, January 13, at Barracuda Cove, followed by another on February 17 at Low Water Bridge on the Arroyo Colorado on Cemetery Road by Port of Harlingen.
