The Port Isabel Historical Museum is displaying a new exhibit exploring more than 50 million years of history in the Valley.

The exhibit is officially called “Ancient Landscapes of South Texas Hiding in Plain Sight.” It strives to educate others on the rich history of South Texas. It will also feature a documentary film on the same subject.

The official press release reads as follows: “Explore 50 million years of natural history and 15,000 years of cultural history of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). From Pleistocene hunters to Spanish rancheros, to the construction of dams and wind turbines, discover how human adaptations were shaped and in turn are shaping the region’s natural history.”

The exhibit is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission fees are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children. The exhibit will be on display up to Dec. 15.

Showtimes for the documentary are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Lighthouse Boutique Hotel. There is no admission fee.

Valerie Bates, Marketing Director for the City of Port Isabel, gave some insight into the exhibit. She hopes “the public will look at the landscape of the RGV a little differently than before.”

There are many “untold stories” that would have stayed as such if it weren’t for the more recent developments in uncovering the local history. The exhibit covers the areas from the East of South Padre Island (SPI) to around Starr city, four counties in total. The exhibit will have artifacts such as coal, salt and quarts excavated from the historical sights.

The Lighthouse Boutique Hotel is a hotel and a café. Reservations are available to be made at reservations@lighthouseboutiquehotel.com and (956) 336-1794. Front desk hours are from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

The Port Isabel Historical Museum is an institution dedicated to sharing the rich history of the area to anyone who is willing to listen. They are available for contact at (956) 943-7602 and info@portisabel-texas.com.
