The Port Isabel community is mourning the loss of Mary Gorball, affectionately known as “Norski,” who passed away suddenly on October 6, 2025, at the age of 86. A longtime Port Isabel Chamber Ambassador and dedicated volunteer, Gorball was known for her warmth, generosity, and tireless commitment to serving others.
Friends, family, and community members gathered on Saturday, October 11, at Chapel by the Sea, to honor Mary’s life, followed by a luncheon at the American Legion in Port Isabel, where she had been active in the Ladies Auxiliary. A Celebration of Life is planned in Iowa on November 8, where she will be buried next to her husband, Richard Gorball.
Mary was born in Forest City, Iowa, and grew up on a family farm before marrying Richard in 1957. The couple raised four children — Jeffrey, Cynthia, Mischelle, and Kristina — eventually settling in Newton, Iowa. Mary built a career at Jasper County Savings Bank, rising from secretary to head of the Investment Center, all while remaining dedicated to her family.
After retiring in 2000, Mary and Richard began spending winters in South Texas as “Winter Texans” and later became permanent residents of Port Isabel in 2004. Following Richard’s passing, Mary continued her community involvement, volunteering at the library, museum, and American Legion, and dedicating countless hours to local events and causes.
“She is a wonderful soul that made everything she touched better. Her passing will have an effect on us all,” said DeeOnda Ahadi.
“A very special person who was a friend to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed,” added Carla McMacken-Mabbott.
Mary’s impact on the community was felt far and wide. From mentoring neighbors to organizing events, her presence was a constant source of support and encouragement. She will be remembered for her warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to Port Isabel and its residents.
The family requests that donations in Mary’s memory be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association Iowa Chapter or Hands to Honduras for the Gorball School.
