The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons had no trouble with the Lady Cardinals of La Villa Tuesday night. They took a 15-5 first quarter lead at Tarpon Gym and, extending it almost at will the rest of the way, won by the final score of 63-20.
Head Coach Alan Ward tried out another new defensive tactic and it obviously worked very nicely. “We worked on a new three-quarter court press, which we hadn’t used at all. It worked pretty well.”
At the start of the evening’s acitivities, though, Ward was most certainly not pleased with the team’s defensive play, and it led to the highly unusual decision to sit all five starters. “I’m not pleased with our attention to detail,” he said. “I took our starters out a minute into the game. They didn’t get into the defense they were supposed to be playing. When I put the starters back in three minutes later we had a bigger lead than when I sat the first five. They (the five subs) did well.”
