For the second time in less than two months, a Port Isabel High School athlete has won a gold medal at the state level of competition.
In March, it was 114-pound lifter Jerry Lopez who won first place at the state powerlifting meet in Abilene. Saturday, Tarpon long-distance runner Armando Fierro ran the race of his high school career, taking the gold medal for his winning run in the 1600-meter race at the state track and field meet in Austin.
Fierro’s time was a personal-best 4:17.95, and he finished three seconds in front of the second-place runner. His previous personal best of 4:20 was recorded at the Meet of Champs in Weslaco in March. The state meet was held at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
