The communities that make up the Laguna Madre region may be small, but big news happens here, and 2015 was no exception.
So much news happens here that deciding on a Top 10 was no easy task. The list of honorable mentions could be just as long, such as the staff and volunteers at Sea Turtle, Inc. overseeing yet another successful Kemp’s ridley sea turtle egg-laying and hatchling season. Or it could include the awe-inspiring feats of some of the region’s youngest athletes, the Port Isabel Little Lakers, who rarely met an opponent they couldn’t best on the hardwood.
But when it comes to the Top 10 stories of 2015, the ones that made the list are the ones we revisited over and over again — stories that evolved, sometimes over the course of a few days, sometimes over the course of a few months. They are the stories that left an indelible mark on our memories. Some are still being told, their effects on our community still hanging in the balance. Some were jaw dropping, others tugged at heartstrings, and still others were stories of the triumph of persistence and hard work.
