The City of Port Isabel and Point Isabel Independent School District elections were fairly decisive as final tallies were announced Saturday evening.

With nearly two-thirds of the vote, former Place 1 Commissioner Juan Jose “J.J.” Zamora won the seat of mayor over former Place 2 Commissioner Maria de Jesus “M.J.” Garza.

“I’m happy — overwhelmed by all the support that we got,” a smiling Zamora said after the initial congratulations and handshakes had tapered down outside City Hall.

Zamora spoke of looking forward to working with the rest of the commission, which now includes newcomers Martin Cantu, Jr., who defeated Michelle Barreiro for Place 1, and Carmen Rios, who defeated former commissioner Mario Tamayo for Place 2.

“We’re going to work together,” Zamora said, for the best of the community.

One of his first priorities is to right the City’s finances, focusing less on projects that come with hefty price tags. “My major plan is to get us back into the black,” he said, adding that he would, “let the city manager run the City.”
