BROWNSVILLE—Renaming an existing road to honor a fallen U.S. Marine has run into a dead end as one of two families want to either keep the road’s name as is, while the other insist the name change is well-deserved.
The Tovar family has been living on the road just north of Harlingen that bears their last name for quite some time; thus, the family is on the side of the name not being changed.
For the Flores family, who live on another Flores Road, renaming Tovar Road to CFC Jose Maria Joe Flores would be the right thing to do for a family member who paid the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for his country during the Vietnam War.
Flores died in 1967 at the age of 19.
The Tovars said they have garnered some 40 signatures supporting their cause, whereas the Floreses said they have the names of close to 30 individuals on their side of the issue.
The road renaming was on the agenda of Tuesday’s, Nov. 22 meeting of the Cameron County Commissioners’ Court.
The agenda’s item was supposed to be routine just as such items regularly appear at such meetings, but it turned out to be a hot potato issue.
