Sophomore performs Heimlich Maneuver on choking freshman
On Nov. 16, 2022, Desiree Vidaurri, a sophomore at Port Isabel High School saved her freshman classmate’s life during their lunch period. The freshman had swallowed a cap off of a whip-cream container, that was unknowingly inside the whip-cream that topped a holiday pie, served by the school to celebrate Thanksgiving. Vidaurri used quick thinking and life-saving skills she learned from her parents to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on her peer, subsequently saving her life.

SpaceX explosion shakes lighthouse
On July 11, 2022, citizens of Port Isabel were rocked by an explosion that took place at SpaceX Boca Chica. The facility was test-firing a prototype of a heavy boost engine. The blast was felt all the way to Laguna Heights and reportedly was so powerful, that it shook the lighthouse in Port Isabel. This concerned the city commission, leading them to question the possibility of future explosions.
