Alexa Ray McGarraugh, 27, was born and raised in Laguna Vista Texas. She lived in the same home on Orange Lane, for the entire first 18 years of her life, before she left for university. In that home, with a bin of vintage film photographs, she began a life-long journey with the art of photography. This passion has become more than just an affinity, and now, McGarraugh has fashioned a lifestyle supported by entrepreneurship, by running her own photography business.
When McGarraugh was a child, her father gave her a large bin of photographs, documenting the lives of her parents, before her birth.
“The feeling I got, looking through all of these adventures my parents had before I even existed – it truly felt like magic. Like, how am I able to have this experience and feel the things I’m feeling looking at this photo, from a time where I was not even on this planet? That blew my mind, and I love that feeling,” said McGarraugh.
That feeling of nostalgia was the first spark of her inspiration, and would later become the aesthetic she revolved her brand around.
Always being in to cameras, at first, McGarraugh made Youtube videos in the time of the website’s hay day. She later attended UT Austin for five years, leaving with two degrees, TV, radio & film, and sociology, with a minor of psychology and a certificate in business.
McGarraugh, originally wanting to work on feature films, realized while in film school, that she didn’t have the attention span for it. However, while there, she took preliminary photography courses, where she was more officially introduced to the art.
“That’s where I fell in love with it. I like the quick satisfaction of a photo,” said McGarraugh.
