One of the last things someone wants to see while driving is those unmistakable red and blue lights lighting up their rearview mirror, especially during the holiday season. The anxiety of not knowing if one is going to get a ticket is never a fun feeling. However, thanks to the Port Isabel Police Department, a couple of lucky people drove away with something much better than they expected.
Chief of Police Robert Lopez wanted to spread some holiday cheer this season by having him and his officers hand out Stripes gift cards instead of tickets.
“People were very surprised; once [people realized] we were giving them a [gift card], their attitude changed, and they were very happy,” Lopez said.
Lopez said that because of the Christmas holiday, the police department wanted to reverse people’s negative thoughts about law enforcement and remind people that there’s more to police officers than just giving out tickets.
