The Port Isabel Tarpons resumed district play this Tuesday as they traveled to Raymondville to take on the Bearkats. Prior to the holiday break, the Tarpons beat Zapata at home 73-43. Meanwhile, Raymondville was coming off playing in a late Dec. tournament where they finished 3-1.
The Bearkats struck first with a three-pointer by Orlando Garza, but PI’s Jeffery Smith responded with a three of his own to tie the game up at 3-3 within the first minute of the game. Both teams’ defenses stepped up as both teams missed shots. With 3:16 left in the first period, PI’s Christian Smith hit his second three-pointer as PI pulled ahead 10-6.
After three missed shots by Raymondville, Christian Smith grabbed the rebound and found his brother, Jeffery Smith, running down the court for the layup and the foul. A successful free throw made it 13-6, PI.   After a 10-2 run by PI, Bearkats’ Adrian Guajardo made a three-pointer with nine seconds left in the first, to make it 20-11 in favor of PI.
In the second period, the Bearkats took advantage of the Tarpons’ miscues and went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 20-18 with 5:48 left in the stanza. Unfortunately for the Bearkats, the Tarpons regrouped and went on a 15-0 run to extend their lead to 35-18 with two minutes left in the first half. The Bearkats went on to make four free throws, but the Tarpons continued to build on their lead, as they now led 43-22 at intermission.
