The Port Isabel Tarpons hosted the La Feria Lionettes this past Friday, Jan. 12 in a district matchup. What looked like a potential blowout for PI at halftime turned into a highly competitive game down the stretch. La Feria trailed by at least 18 points at one time, but came from behind to win the game 56-54.
As the first quarter got underway, PI got on the scoreboard first as Rebekah Camacho secured the tipoff ball and drove to the basket for the layup. The game stalled for a bit as both teams committed several turnovers, forcing PI to call a timeout. Upon returning, PI executed a well-drawn up play as Hannah Mata found Layni Mata opened for the three-point play as PI went up 5-0. The momentum changed as La Feria went on 7-0 run. PI’s L. Mata made a pair of free throws to break La Feria’s run. As the quarter was coming to a close, PI’s Emily Burrage stole the ball and hit a three-pointer. After a highly competitive first quarter, the Lady Tarpons narrowly led 14-12.
