Monday, Feb. 13, the Port Isabel Tarpons hosted the Brownsville Jubilee Titans in their final district game of the season. The Tarpons entered the game with a 26-4 overall record and a 12-1 district record. Meanwhile, Bro. Jubilee came in with an 9-12 overall record including going 5-8 in district. For all intent purposes, a win by PI would secure the district championship and the number one seed going into the playoffs.
The Titans got on the scoreboard first with a two-point basket by Hector Cortina. On the next play, PI’s Christian Smith found Aiden Sanchez down in the paint for the basket. PI then took a 5-2 lead on a three-point basket by Ch. Smith with an assist by Cleveland Smith. Just past mid-quarter, the scoring came to a standstill as the teams struggled to make a basket. As the quarter was coming to an end, the teams traded baskets as the Tarpons held onto a 10-7 lead.
In the second quarter, both teams continued to struggle with their shot. By mid-quarter the Tarpons only hit three of ten shots, yet managed to extend their lead to 16-8. Aggressive defensive play by both teams led to the teams to go over the foul limit as the teams proceeded to trade free throws. A basket by PI’s Sanchez gave PI a 20-11 lead with 2:37 left in the quarter. As the quarter was winding down, both teams’ offenses started to find their shot as the Tarpons closed out the first half with a 24-17 lead.
The second half started to feel like a playoff game as the intensity from both teams increased. The teams started to fight for every loose ball as the refs were handing out jump ball calls left and right. With 5:50 left in the third quarter, Jeffery Smith grabbed a rebound and quickly went back up for the basket to give PI a 29-23 lead. Just under two minutes to go in the third, Jubilee scored a basket to make it 32-30 PI. With the Titans closing in on the Tarpons, Cl. Smith responded with a three-pointer to put PI up 35-30. With three seconds left in the quarter, Ch. Smith made a layup to give PI a 39-32 lead heading into the final stanza.
