The Point Isabel Independent School District held their regularly scheduled meeting as well as a public hearing on March 21, 2023. The meeting began with Superintendent Capistran saying that several presentations were organized to recognize students and staff members.
First among these was Port Isabel Junior High University Interscholastic League team who took first place at the competition held right before spring break began. This is the fifteenth year the team has been the district champions. The staff members who coached the team to its victory were given certificates of recognition.
The next presentation was for the district’s spelling bee winner and the spelling bee coach. The winner was a sixth grade student who took third place at the regional spelling bee. Both the student and his coach committed many weekends to studying and preparing for the competition.
A third presentation scheduled to recognize the boys and girls powerlift team, who both advanced to the state competition, was postponed as the girls team, which had already competed at state, wanted to wait for the boys team to compete before the presentation happened.
Moving forward the board went onto the public hearing portion of their meeting. This hearing was on the District of Innovation plan. This is provided by the state to allow districts flexibility to implement practices like those of charter schools. The board went over a timeline and Superintendent Capistran stressed that the plan being presented was not the final plan nor was it being implemented.
According to the timeline presented, the board had already had a committee formed who came up with a DOI plan which was being presented at the hearing on March 21. After being presented the Board must post the plan for 30 days before they can approve the plan or deny it, making the final hearing on the plan to be scheduled for around April 2023.
