On Wednesday, April 12, Port Isabel High School [PIHS] held a signing event for standout softball player, Celina Marchan.
Marchan signed her letter of intent to play softball at Schreiner University -a private university located in Kerrville, Texas. The Mountaineers play in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) which is composed of nine NCAA Division 3 colleges/universities. As a student-athlete, Marchan is currently in the top five of her class.
Marchan joined the varsity squad during the 2019-2020 softball season and has been the “ace” pitcher for the Lady Tarpons for the last two years. Marchan and the Lady Tarpons are currently 7-3 in the district and have one final regular season game against La Feria on Friday, April 21, with second place on the line.
Marchan, a multi-sport athlete, had many speak fondly of her hard work and determination. Athletic Director Tony Villarreal, who has seen many athletes during his career as a coach and AD, considers her a “generational talent”. The softball head coach, Mario Lazo, spoke fondly of Marchan’s character on and off the field. “She is a testament to what we strive for in every student-athlete here in Port Isabel. She is everything that embodies this school. She is a great leader. She is always there for advice. She’s coachable,” said coach Lazo. “I’m super proud of you. It was an honor and a pleasure to coach someone like you.”
Marchan went on to thank her parents, coaches and teammates. “My parents have put countless hours into softball for me to get here. They’re always there after every game telling me how they’re proud of me,” said Marchan.
Her mother, Monica Garza, recounted how she had doubts about Marchan being a pitcher, but after hard work and determination over the years, her daughter has excelled at it.
