The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons traveled to Calallen to take on the Wildcats in a softball bi-district playoff game. The Lady Wildcats proved too much for the Lady Tarpons as Calallen won by a score of 12-0 in five innings of play. Even though PI pitcher Celina Marchan had some strikeouts, Calallen’s potent offense scored 12 runs on 12 hits including a homerun by Ryanna Rodela.  PI also struggled at times fielding the ball which also led to some extra bases.

It was a tough loss, but the girls had one tough inning. They pulled it together and fought hard; They fought like Tarpons,” said Head softball coach Mario Lazo “We had a good season. We accomplished a lot. Our scrimmage and tournament season were very tough”.

The softball team will be losing two great players to graduation, including pitcher Celina Marchan and shortstop Layni Mata. Other seniors include Oasys Martinez, Malia Villarreal and April Puente.

“We lose a lot in our senior class…going to be very hard to replace,” said Lazo.

On a side note, Marchan will be representing Port Isabel as she joins the Schreiner University softball team next season.

With only one full season coaching the softball team, Lazo is looking forward to continuing to build and mold his team.

“The positive thing is we have a great core coming back for next season [in] Kimberly Barrera, Alexa Vega, Natalie Martinez, Andrea Garcia and Chelsea Gonzalez. All come back and keep our core solid. The future is bright,” said Lazo.
