This Tuesday, May 16, Junior League baseball teams Los Fresnos Padres and the Port Isabel Tarpons were scheduled to play a game. Unfortunately, the fields were still soaking wet due to the recent storms so the game was cancelled.
LF Padres coach, John Kellam reached out to PI coach, Jimmy Garza and informed him that his team wanted to donate supplies for the people affected by the tornado disaster. The gesture hit close to Garza’s heart as some of his players were affected by the tornado, therefore he told Kellam to bring the donations over. They met at the Laguna Madre Youth Center where players from both teams helped unload the items. Garza thanked Kellam and his team for the much-needed contribution.
“This will go to a good cause. Aside from baseball, this is real life. This is where it counts. It means a lot,” said Garza.
The supplies donated included clothing, bedding, food, cleaning wipes, baby wipes, several cases of water and other items. According to Kellam, parents, coaches and the kids all pitched in.
