On Thursday, May 18, the Lady Tarpons hosted volleyball games at the Port Isabel Early College High School.
The first game had the Lady Tarpons facing off with the Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats. Rio Hondo got off to a 2-0 start, but the Lady Tarpons came back to tie it at 2-2. The teams battled it out as they tied the match at 9-9, six minutes into the match. With PI’s Desiree Vidaurri serving, the Lady Tarpons racked up a 14-10 lead. Rio Hondo rallied back to make it 17-16 with Port Isabel still in control. PI then went on another run as they extended their lead to 21-16. With game point on the line, PI’s Valery Gonzalez spiked the ball at the net as PI won the first match, 25-20.
In the second match, the Lady Tarpons jumped out to 3-1, but the Lady Cats managed to tie the game at 4-4. PI had a couple of mistakes returning the ball as Rio Hondo took a 10-16 lead. The Lady Tarpons went on a small run to regain a 14-11 lead behind the serving of Kimberly Estrada. The Lady Tarpons were hanging on to an 18-16 lead with just five minutes left in the match. A couple of serving errors by both teams made it 22-19 in favor of PI. Rio Hondo came roaring back to take a 24-23 win as time expired.
The second game featured Rio Hondo going up against the Jubilee Lady Scorpions. The Lady Cats won their first match against the Scorpions, 25-22. The next match was just as competitive as the Scorpions pulled out a 26-24 win.
