Convention time is right around the corner

By CONNIE THOMAS

Memorial Day has come and gone. Flag Day has come and gone and Fourth of July too. So, what’s next? Well, in Austin, Texas, July 13-16, the State of Texas American Legion Convention convenes, marking the end of one fiscal year and the beginning of another. Newly installed officers will take up, with enthusiasm, their posts and continue the service projects put in place for their individual communities.

Following all 50 state conventions, the national convention convenes Aug. 25-31 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with its newly elected officers and staff taking over.

Post 498 Legionnaires and Unit 498 Auxiliary here in Port Isabel, armed with a Plan of Action POA (POA), will continue to serve our veterans. However, it takes a village to accomplish higher goals, so recruitment of new members is always top priority. The “Buddy Check” system lets those members already volunteering know how much they are appreciated and that they are a part of a whole. Everything the American Legion does for our community and veterans is because of those who put “Service Before Self”.

It’s kind of like the doctor who told his overweight patient “Don’t worry about spreading yourself too thin.” It’s a natural response to not overdue, but when we get out of our comfort zone and take the initiative, we are usually quite glad we were able to help and make a difference.
