On June 21, 2023, the South Padre Island City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting. After the normal invocations, they opened the meeting with public comments and announcements.
The first of these were made by SPI Mayor Patrick Mcnulty, saying the July 4 parade would be held at 9:30 a.m., starting at Beach Access 8, and go to Beach Access 4.

The second was a comment from a citizen named Jason Yedder, who lives on the bayside of the Island. His comment was to do with how the shoreline department had, as he said, “Decided that the residents of my street can all get together and vote on what they’d like to put in the public right away, right outside my house. I think that’s kind of crazy. I don’t think that’s legal. It’s a street. It’s not an HOA. It’s not a city park. It’s just the street outside my house.”

He then asked the city attorney to weigh in on the amenities on his street and to have the city council attend the next shoreline department meeting and see what is happening.

After public comments, the council moved on to discussion regarding the fiscal year 2023 to 2024 CVB budget. This began by a showing of the summary of hotel motel and convention center funds which illustrated a surplus of roughly four million dollars. The total revenue for these categories was close to 13 million dollars, with 12 million coming from the hotel/motel occupancy tax and only about $336,000 coming from the convention center’s revenue itself.

During this presentation, it was also shown that a feasibility study for the Convention Center Expansion was completed in March and a RFQ was put out in June for design and architecture. To this end, a committee was formed to evaluate the RFQ responses.

The next item on the council’s agenda was a discussion and possible action to approve the authorization of execution of an advanced funding agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for a Transportation Alternative Set Aside program project. This would be to approve the construction of a PR 100 bike lane. The council approved this unanimously.
